Originally known as 'flight jackets,' the ancestors of today's bomber jackets took to the skies in 1917, designed by the US Army Aviation Clothing Board to shield WWI pilots from the biting cold of open-air cockpits. The evolution of flight jacket design mirrored the progress of aviation, from the knit-waisted A-1 in 1927 to the iconic MA-1, setting a new standard for functional outerwear. It is regarded as one of the earliest designs to truly bridge the gap between military and civilian wear.
